A Daughter's Encouragement

A Mother Is Thankful After Some Encouragement From Her Daughter

“Mom, would you please go get your hearing checked!” That question from my daughter is what got me to visit Ellis-Scott & Associates.

It's a Family Affair

Sisters Share Loss, Treatment

Kathy, the oldest at 64, started gradually losing her hearing during college. Her loss accelerated with each of her four pregnancies, finally forcing her to seek help in her late 20s. Her younger sister Pat, 62, from Chicago, needed hearing aids when she was just seven years old. Kathy recalls Pat wearing the old box-style hearing aid as a barrette in her hair when she was a young girl. And Judy, 54, of Detroit, has only started experiencing her hearing loss later in life.

Three different women, three different cities, three different states… yet they all share one more thing in common. They all go to Hearing Solutions by Ellis-Scott & Associates. Kathy discovered Ellis-Scott more than 30 years ago, and won’t go anywhere else. She’s so emphatic about it, in fact, that she’s convinced her sisters from Chicago and Detroit to come to Milford for treatment.

“It’s mind-boggling to me,” says Kathy, “that in those big cities, they can’t find anybody competent to treat them. The people at Ellis-Scott are like family to me, and I trust what they say. And Lowell (Scott) is the most patient man! He really listens to me and never gives up,” she added.

That patience and persistence was especially important to younger sister Judy. Severe allergies have left her sensitive to many substances, and every hearing aid she tried caused discomfort. “Lowell kept at it,” Kathy recalled. “He said there’s one substance that nobody is allergic to, and that’s gold. So he gold-plated Judy’s hearing aids, and it worked! That’s why Judy comes all the way from Detroit to see Lowell.”

As for Kathy, she couldn’t be happier with her Imagine Premier C-I-C hearing aids. “I can’t say enough good things about Lowell Scott, his mother Joyce, and all of the staff. It really is like family.” And the rest of Kathy’s family agrees.

A Soldier’s Story

A Grandmother Hears Just How Much Her Grandson Loves Her

79-year-old Bernice Bergett of Florence had grown accustomed to the fact that she could not hear. After so many years of declining hearing, it had simply become a way of life for her and her family. It was just accepted that “grandma can’t hear.”

But it wasn’t accepted by everyone in her family. Bernice’s 27-year-old grandson, Army Specialist Richard Lear, had other ideas.

“I just wanted to take care of her,” Lear said. “She’d been let down enough times, and it was time to do something about it.”

So while Lear was stationed in Iraq, clearing routes with the engineers, he got an idea. Lear started saving his money with the goal of buying hearing aids for his beloved grandmother when he returned home.

“She’s my only grandparent, and we spent a lot of time together when I was growing up,” Lear said. “She would watch me while my mom worked. And for as long as I can remember, she’s always been hard of hearing.”

When Lear returned to the States, he took his grandmother to Ellis-Scott and Associates, where she was fitted with the Imagine Classic ITC hearing instrument. The results were immediate, and nothing short of amazing.

“When they first put them on her, I said ‘I love you Grandma’ in my normal voice, and she turned and smiled real big and said ‘I love you, too’. To hear her speak right to me, and being able to understand me, was such an amazing feeling. That alone was worth the cost,” said Lear.

Lear’s grateful for an aunt who chipped in to help defray the cost, but still wishes he could have done it much sooner. “She should have had them a long time ago,” he said. “She deserves this. She’s a great woman, and she’s lived a good life.” As for Bernice, she’ll never get tired of hearing, “I love you, Grandma.”
